How much do you like mail?
How much junk mail do companies need to send out? It seems like I am getting more and more junk mail these days and to be honest I can’t really understand why. I’m curious as to what companies who send these out are thinking and what their rationale is behind continually sending me mail that never gets open.
In the recent economic downturn businesses, particulary banks, are scrapping together ways to save every penny they can. They are cutting out bonuses, letting people go, etc. I would think a good place to start is to stop sending me your offers for a new line credit. I bet I get an offer in the mail for a new card or new offer every day. Everyone loves getting mail but please, stop the insanity.
Not only will you save money by not sending me your unwarranted offers, but you’ll be cutting down on the waste of paper as well. Think of how much gets wasted everyday by junk mail. I don’t even open it and it gets thrown right in the trash. What a waste. Companies are usually PAYING someone to send this stuff to our mailboxes.
The strange thing is it must work otherwards they wouldn’t send it out right? But shouldn’t they know who to target better and focus on people who might be prone to accept the offers and promotions? It just feels like such a waste to me and it doesn’t have to be that way.
But alas, I found a way out! This site tells you how to get out of the ‘contract’ you signed up for in receiving all that mail. I know I am going to sign-up right away. If you hate coming home to a full mailbox everyday, I recommend doing the same.

I think most people share your opinion on this subject, junk mail sucks. It seems like a waste of resources. However, it works, like you said. Depending on what a company is selling, they usually only need a very small percentage of respondents to get a good return on investment.
They can “blanket” a geographical area, usually by zip code, or even purchase a mailing list based on demographic information that fits thier target. They have found you by one of these methods, and you are probably more often than not the person they have defined as someone “prone to accept the offers and promotions”.
With postage rising, you may start to notice a slight decline with single piece direct mail advertising.
