How much would you pay for someone to do your grocery shopping for you?

Continuing on my service analysis I pose a very simple question - how much would you pay for someone to do your grocery shopping for you?

Although I don’t mind going to the grocery in general, living in a city makes a trip to the grocery quite a bit more challenging. First, the closest grocery to me is .6 miles away. Not horrible, but not close especially if you want to get a decent amount of groceries in one trip. Second, as I noted in my last analysis, there is quite a bit of time involved. I would guess a round-trip takes me close to an hour for one weeks worth of groceries.

Not factoring in anything else other than the hassle (walking, hauling, etc) and the time that it takes to actually shop I began thinking about how much this would be worth to me. Shortly after, I found myself browsing through Peapod and before I knew it I had stashed about $80 in groceries (2 weeks worth) in my virtual cart. Going through the check-out I quickly noticed that the cost was $10.

So, is $10 worth 2 trips to the grocery along with the hassle? I think so and I’ve used Peapod twice consecutively now. The service allows you to search for products, has a great selection of grocery items, has items on sale, suggests items, allows you to select your delivery time and allows you to order the exact list you had last time!

Thus far I am very impressed by the service and will continue to use it. I’ve found the prices to be about normal, but have not done a deep investigation. The convenience paired with the right price has me sold.

What do others think? Am I lazy? Is this a waste of money? Is there an easier way?

oh will. 0.6 miles is not far away…i would welcome the walk since it’s a chance to get in some exercise! and i also actually love strolling up and down the aisles looking at different food items…i dunno, it’s not a bad pasttime. :)

i understand the plight of the weekly grocery run while living in a city. instead of making large trips i find myself going to the store multiple times a week. picking up fresh items for dinner or lunch the next day while on my way home from work. because i have only a few items to choose from once at home, i make sure not to waste and use all fresh items before they spoil. helps me stay creative with spices and methods etc while cooking to keep from being bored by the ingredients :) i would never pay someone to do my grocery shopping unless i was physically unable to! I walk .75 miles to work each way… might as well throw in a few more steps to get my heart rate going and pack-mule it home with a backpack and one or two reusable grocery bags. Yes it may take an extra hour out of my day, but that’s an hour that would have been spent on the computer or stagnant indoors. be a part of the city, do your own shopping!
